4th Annual West Africa Trade & Commodity Finance Conference

GhanaAccra, Ghana | June 26-27, 2012
Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel

Event Review

The 4th Annual West Africa Trade & Commodity Finance Conference moved to Accra, Ghana, from London for the first time to widely acclaimed success. Over two hundred influential business and banking leaders converged on the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel to discuss the opportunities and challenges in financing regional trade.

As West Africa continues to propel itself into the global limelight due to an abundant wealth of natural resources, the conference was well timed to tackle key issues relating to the development of the domestic commodities markets as well increasing intra-regional trade - crucial to economic prosperity. Other topics discussed at the conference included the impact of government risk on African financial institutions, Sub-Saharan corporate and structured trade finance solutions, developing the cocoa and energy sectors, the role of Francophone countries in West Africa, latest trends within the syndicated loan market, the importance of Asia and Latin America to regional growth as well as Basel III and the increasing importance of export and ECA finance.

The deputy chief executive of Ghana Cocobod, Dr. Adu-Ampomah, gave a keynote address on the Ghanaian cocoa sector which highlighted the importance of a centralised body in aiding the growth of local producers, as well as speaking on Cocobod’s annual syndication. Other important institutions, such as Olam International, Stallion Group and Equipxp gave their unique insights into the changing priorities and financing needs of leading corporates in the region.

The extensive two day event brought together a truly international audience with delegates coming from Ghana, Nigeria, Cote D'Ivoire, South Africa, Liberia, Senegal, the UK, the US, Switzerland, Germany, the UAE and the Netherlands.

As with all Exporta events, networking was a key theme throughout the day. The event provided the ideal setting for peer-to-peer networking amongst key decision makers, with new business relationships being formed as well as the chance to meet old friends.

The conference welcomed support by Diamond Bank, Standard Bank, Ecobank, Ghana International Bank, DHL Express, Deutsche Bank, Afreximbank, FMO, FBN Bank, Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa & Ankomah, Equipxp and Mauritius Commercial Bank.
