Moscow provided the venue for Exporta's return to Russia, with the Russia & Eurasia Trade & Investment Forum taking place on February 8-9. A strong mix of local and international trade finance heads and investment specialists gathered over the two days, to debate the challenges faced for doing business in the region and assess how local banks have themselves found the slow process of recovery, as confidence within the Russian market is gradually restored.

The conference covered a wide range of issues, from the return of foreign banks to the Russian market as appetites for risk grow, to the need for liquidity and enhancing working capital management processes, while also considering the potential for large and small deals in 2010. Case studies were provided on multilateral programmes such as the EBRD Trade Facilitation Programme, while focus was also placed on increasing trade and investment flows between Russia and other emerging markets such as Asia and Africa.

Day Two of the conference centred more on the various commercial opportunities available within the Central Asian region, including presentations by the International Bank of Azerbaijan and the Asian Development Bank - recent debt restructuring in Kazakhstan and political unrest in Ukraine being among the themes covered. Discussions also took place on how the maximise the various investment opportunities within Russia and surrounding countries.

The forum was well attended and the format of case studies, panel discussions and informal networking breaks led to lively debate and fruitful business exchange, with an evening networking reception taking place on Day One. While progress is likely to be slow, events such as this demonstrate the will is there to do business within the region.
