Event Review

Indonesia’s senior business leaders gathered in Jakarta to discuss new opportunities available to both the local and international trade community - as well as the financial institutions supporting their trade. Discussion at Exporta’s inaugural Indonesia Trade & Commodity Finance Conference centred on changing corporate priorities, how banks can utilise rising trade levels and why the country’s optimistic outlook has instilled confidence and risk appetite of foreign investors.

As the Indonesian market experiences a dramatic surge in popularity amongst the global investment community, the conference was well timed to tackle market defining topics, such as the need for increased liquidity to support escalating levels of trade, the rising importance of bilateral trade with Australia, the role of trade credit insurance, the growing value of ECAs to exporters as well as the upward trend for shariah-compliant finance products.

Analysing support mechanisms for corporate growth also played a central role within the conference. The Director and Chief Financial Officer of Toshiba, President Commissioner of Pan Brothers and the Director of Corporate Services of Trikomsel Oke gave their opinions on how corporates find access to the right kind of financing and analysed the demand for products and services, such as letters of credit and open account.

The conference was the perfect setting for high-level networking with a healthy mix of domestic, regional and global delegates. One of the key features of the conference was the emphasis on making new business connections so essential collaborations and partnerships could be forged. The conference welcomed support from Bank Danamon, ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, the ITFC and Markel and would not have been possible without them.

Due to overwhelming positive delegate feedback and market demand, Exporta look forward to including the Indonesia Trade & Commodity Finance Conference into its calendar of global events and will be in Jakarta in 2012 for another day of informed discussion and unrivalled networking.

Description

Now permanently established in the continent as a result of the establishment of Exporta Asia PTE, Exporta will build on the success of regular events in Singapore, Mumbai and Shanghai by staging its first Indonesia Trade & Commodity Finance Conference, which will take place in Jakarta.

Like so many markets in the region, Indonesia felt the effects of the global recession as a result of key export destination markets drying up in 2008/2009, along with decreasing oil and gas export values/volumes. However, a strong domestic economy and reliance on local buyers have ensured that exports have continued flowing, while attempts to tighten liquidity have resulted in number of beneficial government measures.

As a market, Indonesia provides enormous opportunities, particularly in the commodities sector, as the world’s largest exporter of thermal coal and third largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), with other key exports including crude palm oil and various other raw materials.

The conference will look to draw on these opportunities and discuss the availability of trade finance for local exporters, from both the local and international banking sector. Delegates will have the chance to hear detailed case studies and take part in informed panel debate, with strong focus also on networking and relationship building.
